Reconsider

FACTS:

A regular scheduled lafourche parish council meeting was held on tuesday, mAY 23, 2006. One of the many items on the adgenda addressed the appointment of two individuals to fill vacancies on the fire protection district number 6 board. Councilman Tommy Lasseigne recommended Mr. Fontenot and Mr. Gaubert. Councilman Michael Matherne recommended Mr. Meire. The majority of the council voted to appoint Mr. Fontenot and Mr. Gaubert to fill the vacancies. The meeting continued. After all of the items on the adgenda was addressed, a reconsideration of the appointments to the fire protection board was called for. Councilman Phillip Gouaux stated that he didn’t know if the reconsideration would be legal. Mr. Matherne motioned to appoint Mr. Gaubert and Mr.Meire. Mr. Matherne’s motion passed 5 to 4 with toups, Lasseigne, Lorraine, and Atzenhoffer voting against.

OPINIONS:

Every vote made by a councilman is important to lafourche parish and its citizens. In my opinion, when any councilman has a question about any issue, the councilman should refrain from voting until the question can be answered. The District Attorney may give an opinion on the reconsideration. Right or wrong, it has the appearance of impropriety. Was this the action Lafourche first had in mind for parish government?

Today being Memorial day, I would like to express my gratitude to all Americans who gave up so much in order to retain our freedom.
