Lafourche Parish President Practice Veto Power

FACTS:

The Lafourche Parish Council, at its last regular scheduled meeting, voted successfully on over-riding Parish President Charlotte Randolph’s veto of an ordinance creating law for the instillation of drainage culverts.

OPINIONS:

In my opinion, the parish president and the parish council were wrong in wasting tax payers money and time on this issue.  The Lafourche Parish Council had a policy in force for the installation of drainage culverts.  It worked well for many years; Why change it?  Ms. Randolph is said to have stated that the DA and Attorney General opinions say the parish should recoup cost of installation.  Ms. Randolph and Council members, an opinion is not law.  Why did you not challenge the opinion or ignore it?  Is it because it is adding more money from the tax payers into your alleged over spent parish coffers?

It is alleged that the Parish used money from the Health Unit funds to purchase a building for the DA and his staff.  It is alleged that an opinion from the Attorney General stated that the Health Unit funds cannot be used to purchase a building for the purpose intended.  Why is the Parish President challenging this opinion?  Why didn’t the Parish President request an opinion from the DA prior to the expenditure?

It is alleged that Councilman Mike Matherne of Thibodaux is trying to get the Library Board to purchase two buildings known as the Foundry and Dixie Glass in Thibodaux.  Is it just this writer or does it appear that large ugly buildings located in down-town Thibodaux will be taken off the owner’s hands by the Lafourche Parish Council at tax-payers expense?

It is my opinion, that if I was a judge in Lafourche Parish, I Would surely be embarrass at having to work in the Parish’s deplorable buildings.  I would be wondering; Why the purchase of more buildings when you cannot take care of the existing buildings?

Let us all be thankful that the great state of Louisiana will use tax money to aid individuals with the rebuilding of their homes.  Let us be thankful that the Lafourche Parish Council installed drainage culverts in road side drainage ditches using tax payers equipment, prior to Ms. Randolph’s administration.
