Is voting in Lafourche Parish a Duty?

FACTS:

A host of a popular talk show on Cable TV stated that more young people should exercise their right to vote.  A guest on the talk show asked why should they?  The guest continued by explaining his position.  If a voter is not educated on the issues or do not know a candidate’s position on an issue, it would be better not to vote.  It is alleged that Capt. Kirk, host of KLRZ “Talk on the Bayou”, stated that voting is a duty.  I disagree.

OPINIONS:

In my opinion, a voter may want to understand all of the issues and the real reasons behind a candidate running, or not vote at all.  When voters cast a vote without understanding the issues, America can end up with a do-nothing Congress which has a popularity rating of less than 30%.  Lafourche Parish could end up with do-nothing elected officials like Craig Webre, Cam Morvant, Charlotte Randolph, Phillip Gouaux, Brent Callais, etc.  No, Capt. Kirk, voting is not a duty, it is a choice.  It is a choice which must be taken seriously.

Terrebonne Parish recently held an election with one of the proposals being a tax for levee protection.  The voters (tax payers) had a choice to vote for or against the tax or not vote at all.  All three choices were equally important.

The voters of Lafourche Parish will have a choice in the South Lafourche area.  The South Lafourche Levee District will propose a one cent sales tax for levee improvements.  There are a few simple questions to answer before a voter exercise his/her choice.
1. Who are the people requesting our additional tax dollars?
2. Who will benefit?
3. Will the extra tax dollars benefit my family better in a bank account or at the whims of the South Lafourche Levee District Board?
Should the South Lafourche area experience a 28 feet tidal serge during a hurricane, the levied area in the South Lafourche community will have at least 15 feet of water for a long time, with or without the passage of the tax.  We may want to put our money towards evacuating our families rather than on a project which could do very little during a major storm event.

Keep in touch, voters have a choice, study your options before you decide.
