Were Orwell and Toole, Writers With Foresight?
FACTS:
Reading novels from the past sort of tie in to today’s current events.
OPINIONS:
In 1949, writer George Orwell wrote a novel which condemn a totalitarian government bent on total manipulation. The title of the novel is”1984″. If memory serves me correctly, Mr. Orwell refers to government as “BIG BROTHER”. Most of us have heard the term, Big Brother is watching, which refers to the non-existing privacy of the citizenry. Does Big Brother exist in Lafourche Parish and America, today?
A book published in 1980 and reissued in September of 1987 was written by John Kennedy Toole. The novel, “A Confederacy of Dunces”, is set in New Orleans in the 1960’s. The main character, Ignatius Reilly, at one point during the story attempt to get Dorian Green, a flamboyant French Quarter Homosexual and his “sodomite friends” to infiltrate the army and thus “take down world wide government”. It is implied that Ignatius felt that the election of homosexuals as political leaders would assure world peace. Are we in Lafourche Parish and America getting closer to world peace?
The US Congress appropriated tax payers money to construct a fence along the US southern border in an effort to keep our southern neighbors out of America. Some may agree that this money may be better spent by erecting a fence around the “Page Living Quarters” in Washington D. C. to keep some Congress members away from our young Pages?
Stay in touch, tomorrow is an election day, GOOD LUCK to ALL CANDIDATES.
