Lafourche Parish Tax Payers,
FACTS:
When the Lafourche Parish Council accept a sub-division into the parish system, they accept full responsibility for maintenance and up-keep of all road side ditches. Grass cutting and clean-out is a on-going process which the parish is fully responsible for.
If a resident decide to place culverts in the road side ditch, he is saving the parish money. The parish is saving years of regular maintenance. Why does the parish insist on penalizing tax payers for saving the parish money?
OPINIONS:
Once upon a time an Attorney General was elected because of name recognition, not qualifications. The AG office issued an opinion (not law) which stated that a local governing authority must re-coupe the cost of installing culverts in parish owned ditches. The AG may have have fallen out of a pecan tree, minutes before issuing his opinion.
Low and behold, a female type parish president and a male type Councilman traveled to a neighboring parish (County) where they learned of the AG opinion. The Parish President was all excited about charging the tax payers of her parish money for what has been an entitlement. The parish legal adviser (District Attorney) who apparently was picking pecans at the time the AG fell out of the tree, agreed with the AG opinion.
The council did not agree with the amount of money the parish administration wanted to charge the tax payers. Twice, the Parish President vetoed an ordinance because she wanted to charge more money. Twice the Council overode her veto because they (all councilmen but two of them) wanted to charge less money.
The bottom line is that the tax payers will now pay for what should be an entitled service. It is my opinion that the tax payers are not being properly represented by the AG, DA, Parish President, or the Parish Council.
None of this would make any difference if this happened in Lafourche Parish. Any elected official can sell a surplus fence from the Mexican Border, to the tax payers of Lafourche Parish, and use it for flood protection somewhere between Larose and Lockport. “Let em’ have it!
Stay in touch. Observe the actions of your elected officials. They really believe that they are helping the tax payers by charging less, rather than nothing.
